Strengthening quality control of fish feed

(vasep.com.vn) Vietnam has about 130 fish feed producing plants producing 4,500 feed products and 110 supplementary feed plants supplying 311 products.

The production of fish feed throughout the country reported remarkable increase in recent years with total annual output of 3.7 million MT. However, domestic fish feed production depends much on foreign feed suppliers and lacks of consistent managing regulations. As a result, farmers are affected by low quality feed products.

Low-quality fish feed makes farmed fish grow slowly and it costs farmers much money for feeding. Thailandfarmers need 1.1 kilogram of feed to produce 1 kilogram of shrimp while farmers in Vietnam need up to 1.3 kilogram of feed to get the same amount of shrimp. This leads to less profit for shrimp farmers.
