A delegation from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade made a working visit to Indonesia on July 6 to bolster trade co-operation between the two countries as well as to prepare for the birth of ASEAN Community in 2015.

Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry’s director general of fish production, marketing and processing Saut Hutagalung said his country highly appreciated Vietnam’s market potential for seafood products as well as its interest in Indonesia’s fishery sector.

Indonesia’s export turnover of shrimp, crab, seaweed and ornamental fish to Vietnam in January this year hit 27.36 million USD, an increase of 32.24 per cent compared to the same period last year. Also, Indonesia has planned to boost its seafood exports to Viet Nam, its only strategic partnership nation in Southeast Asia.

It is expected that Indonesia’s seafood export turnover to Viet Nam in 2014 will reach US$100 million.

It’s time for Indonesia to boost its shrimp export since global shrimp price is increasing due to short supply. EMS in Asean coutries push global shrimp price to US$13/kg compared to that of US$9/kg in the same time last year.

In recent years, Indonesia’s fishery sector has gained considerable achievements in both production and export.

Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sharif Cicip Sutardjo announced earlier this year that the sector has targeted its output of 20.95 million tonnes, including farming and catch production of 13.97 and 6.08 million tonnes, respectively and export turnover of US$5.56 billion this year.

According to CNN’s recent report, Indonesia holds a remarkable position in the global fishing industry as it uses up to 200 million labourers and generates US$80 billion/year.
